Sunscreen Lotion
Tired of slathering on chemical-laden sunscreen that you KNOW is not healthy for you or your children? Before purchasing your next bottle of sunscreen lotion check out this all natural recipe that works just as well as store bought and is completely safe for you and your babies.
Ingredients
-1 ounce oil blend (1 cup)
-1 ounce beeswax (1 cup)
-1 ounce butter
blend (i.e shea butter, mango butter, or
cocoa butter) (1 cup)
-1 teaspoon vitamin
e oil
-0.36 ounces zinc
oxide powder (12%) (2 tablespoons)
-30 drops essential
oils of choice (avoid citrus essential
oils, they increase UV exposure)
Method
1. In a double
broiler, slightly heat the oils, beeswax and butters.
2. Remove from heat
and allow to cool slightly prior to adding the vitamin e oil, zinc oxide
powder, and essential oils.
3. Stir until zinc
oxide is dissolved.
4. Pour into a
push-up or roll-up dispenser. (add mixture to dispenser when slightly thick to
prevent settling)
5.Allow to cool and
harden on the counter overnight.
Notes:
-This sunscreen has a shelf life of 6 months – 1 year.
-Wear a mask when working with zinc oxide. It has not been
proven harmful when used topically, but inhaling the substance can be
dangerous.
Carrier oils to use that contain SPF properties:
-Raspberry seed
oil. Contains highest amount of SPF among all natural ingredients with an SPF
of 30-50.
-Carrot Seed Oil.
An essential oil that has been estimated to contain SPF levels of 30.
-Wheat Germ Oil.
While super nourishing for the skin, it too possesses a natural SPF of 20.
-Shea Butter. This
wonderful butter is a skin protectant with an SPF of 6-10.
-Sesame oil,
coconut oil, hemp oil, avocado oil, soybean and peanut oil all contain SPF
levels of 4-10.
Essential oils that have SPF properties:
-Lavender
-Myrrh
-Carrot
-Peppermint
-Sea Buckthorn
